Susan Powers

Susan Powers is a therapist for the Children's Assessment Center.  She helps children cope with the often serious repercussions of sexual abuse. She is closely involved with the children that come to the Center and often accompanies her kids in court when necessary. Her recent work has focused on helping children through play and art therapies.

Originally from Mason, Michigan, Susan's involvement in therapy began with her studies. She received a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Western Michigan University in 1989, which led to a Master’s in Counseling Psychology. Prior to her association with the Center, she spent over twelve years in the field, first as an intern, and then working for a guidance clinic in Kalamazoo. She continues to think of her work as a process of ongoing training.

“I love the team approach,” explains Susan, whose work often connects her with other staff members and law enforcement. It is clear that the techniques used by the Center have proven to her to be very effective. She feels the focus is on the children.  Their comfort influences the way things are done, from details like the colors of the rooms, to the number of people present during a counseling session or interview. She notes that apology sessions have proven especially effective in helping children to understand each situation and aid them in the process of recovery.

It is clear that Susan considers her work to be extremely rewarding. She admits it can be tough at times, but she never regrets what she is doing and is continually surprised by how resilient the children can be. Susan loves the steps that the Children's Assessment Center is taking to support victims of child abuse, as well as educating the community. “I'm not a millionaire,” says Susan, “but I love what I am doing here.”
